EN81-70 : DDA REGULATIONS

The above regulation is for accessibility to lifts for persons including persons with disability.

Access to lift car

  • Lift door access to be a minimum of 800mm wide.
  • Lift doors to be automatic in operation.
  • Door dwell time is between 2 and 20 seconds.
  • Full height door protection provided electronic barrier.
  • All floors to lift car clear of any obstacles 1500 x 1500.
  • Handrail to be fitted to at least one wall of the lift car at approx height of 900mm from floor level.
  • Provide a mirror to enable a wheelchair user to observe obstacles behind them when moving backwards, if unable to turn around in the lift car.
  • Stopping accuracy ±10mm.
  • Levelling accuracy ±20mm.

Lift car control devices and signals

  • Push buttons 490mm? with 20mm circular active part.
  • Push buttons to be visually and by touch different from the faceplate and surrounds.
  • Faceplate is a contrast colour to its surround.
  • Visual and audible feedback confirming push button operation. Signals adjustable between 35 to 65 db(A).
  • Exit floor button protrudes 5mm and surround coloured green.
  • Maximum height 1200mm.
  • Push buttons marked -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 (0 = ground floor).
  • Voice floor designation.
  • Alarm button to be yellow with bell shape symbol.
  • Car position indicator / direction of travel signals.
  • Audible signals for door operation.
  • Min height from floor level to lowest button 900mm.
  • Min distance to any button from corner of lift 400mm.
  • Emergency Lighting and emergency alarm device.

Landing control devices and signals

  • Push buttons to be vertical.
  • Push buttons to be visually and by touch different from the faceplate and surrounds.
  • Visual and audible feedback confirming push button operation. Signals adjustable between 35 to 65 db(A).
  • Car position or direction of travel indicated above or near the landing doors.
  • Min distance to any button from the corner of any adjacent wall 500mm.

EN81-28 : REMOTE COMMUNICATIONS

EN81-28 is a European standard applicable to all lift installations applicable to EN81 standards.

The building owner must provide 2-way communication to a rescue service which is manned 24 hours per day 365 days per year. This rescue service should be capable of responding to any alarm. The building owner shall give sufficient information to the rescue service to allow safe access to the building.

The rescue service must have the capability to:-

  • Exercise a 24 hour manned response time.
  • Provide human resources to receive calls and establish 2-way communication.
  • Provide resources to automatically check and test the alarm every three days.
  • Provide resources to respond to the alarm.

For the rescue service to function they must be able to identify:-

  • Address of originating call including location.
  • Identification of lift car and means to gain access to trapped lift user.
  • Special hazards including access to the building and contact for access.
  • Means of establishing 2-way communication to inform and notify status of the rescue operation.

Note: If the building owner provides 24 hour on site attendance with trained staff to undertake rescue procedure and risk assessment including three day testing of alarm functions and a communication device to communication with trapped passengers then in certain instances the automatic device may not be required.Please consult with Acute Elevators Limited.

Acute Elevators Limited will provide on all passenger lift installations an automatic auto-dial telephone system manufactured to EN81-28. This is also optional for our platform lifts.

Acute Elevators Limited and their approved service agents will provide the facilities to operate maintain and test the auto-dial system. The system utilised will be a general make programmable by any third party service company. Note: The third party service must be able to provide the full commitment as detailed by EN81-28 including three day testing
