At Acute Elevators, we design, supply, and install both Part M compliant commercial wheelchair lift solutions and EN81-20 passenger lift systems for buildings across the UK. With over 25 years of experience, we combine considered design with proven reliability. Our platform and passenger lifts integrate seamlessly into both indoor and outdoor environments, providing safe, compliant, and independent movement between levels. They enable project teams to create accessible, well‑designed environments while ensuring smooth, efficient passenger movement between floors.
Commercial platform lifts, also known as cabin lifts, are certified to the Machinery Directive 2006/42. Operating at a maximum speed of 0.15 m/s and typically serving up to five floors, they are most commonly specified for disabled access and Part M compliance, where compact design and slower travel speeds are appropriate.
Commercial passenger lifts are certified to EN81-20/50 and operate at significantly higher speeds, typically between 1.0 m/s and 2.5 m/s. Designed for efficient passenger movement across multiple floors, they are ideal for higher-traffic environments and are fully compliant with EN81-70 for disabled access.

Commercial wheelchair platform lifts are generally self-contained and do not require a separate machine room. Most models operate with minimal pit depth and low headroom, making them suitable for retrofit projects or tight building spaces.
Architect considerations:
• Reduces structural modifications needed in existing buildings.
• Machinery and controls can be integrated into the lift structure.
• Supports flexible placement in corridors, lobbies, or stairwell adjacencies.
In summary:
These lifts offer space-efficient solutions without compromising safety or compliance, allowing smoother integration into building designs.
Commercial platform lifts are suitable for 2 to 5 floors, depending on building requirements and the specific model.
Key points for planning:
• Travel height can be adapted to low-rise and mid-rise applications.
• Required load capacity, cabin size (usually 1400mm x 1100mm for Part M compliance) door configurations and the number of levels served.
• Designers should confirm available pit depth, headroom and structural supports for multi-floor travel during early planning stages.
In summary:
Lifting height and floor reach can be tailored to the building while maintaining accessibility and safety for users.
Costs vary depending on lift type, drive type, cabin size, travel height, speed and site-specific installation needs.
Factors affecting cost:
• Standard commercial wheelchair platform lift vs passenger lift.
• Installation complexity: pit requirements, structural supports, and integration with services.
• Optional features: panoramic glass, bespoke finishes, or specialised controls.
In summary:
Acute Elevators provides bespoke quotes tailored to each project, balancing performance, accessibility, and budget considerations.
Maintenance is critical to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
Best practice guidance:
• Routine inspections - platform/cabin lifts every 6 months, passenger lifts every 3 months for standard usage, or more frequently for high-traffic locations.
• Preventive maintenance checks include motors, controls, emergency systems, and safety devices.
• Keeping records ensures ongoing compliance with UK lift regulations.
In summary:
Regular servicing protects users, prolongs lift life, and supports compliance without repeating design or installation details already covered elsewhere on the page. For more detailed guidance, see our blog: How Often Should Different Types of Lift Be Serviced?
