About

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

Acute Elevators were approached by the City of London to look at the feasibility to install a new 2500kg Goods Passenger Lift with its own steel supporting structure to serve between street level and the basement on the western side of Walbrook Wharf to move the road sweepers from the street level down to the basement to the new charging bays. The proposed location was an existing open void, where waste was dropped from the sweepers at street level down to the basement level to be disposed of. Following a detailed Survey (including CAT scan of the basement slab) of the proposed location, the space was large enough for a lift, but the scan confirmed that to excavate a lift pit was impossible due to the existing piling of the building.

Goods Passenger Lift with low pit

Challenge

The team at Acute had to design a lift not only to meet the constraints of the building (no pit) but to be capable of intensive usage, meet the rated lifting load of 2500kg, be CAT 1 vandal resistant, and be IP rated as the upper floor landing at street level was external. To achieve the above a bespoke solution would be required, as no supplier/manufacturer has a standard product that would meet all our requirements.

solution

We designed and proposed a lift certified under the Machinery Directive, to reduce the pit requirement to a minimum as the lower entrance would need to be ramped. we opted for a Traction Drive unit due to the usage and external requirements as a hydraulic drive would be problematic number of required starts per hour and the environmental element of temperature. The lift would have a lift car dimension of 2700mm x 1850mm, with through entry/exit configuration, a rated load of 2500kg, 6 panel 1800mm wide centre opening EI120 fire rated doors, with a 150mm ramp at the lower entrance to alleviate the need for a pit. Protection crash bollards were to be fitted at each landing entrance and both car entrances to protect the car and landing door frames from damage during the loading and unloading process.

Result

Following numerous meetings with Client the final specification was agreed and a program was formulated. The complete design was verified and manufactured in only 16 weeks. The installation took 8 weeks, as part of our role we continued to undertake regular site visits and produced progress reports to ensure the project was running smoothly and adhering to programme, reassuring the client with bulletin updates. Once works were completed, we carried out full comprehensive test and verification witnessed by the client to ensure the new installation was fully compliant and installed to our standards and the Clients expectations. The project was delivered within the original programme; the dedication shown by the full team at Acute Elevators was greatly appreciated.
